Opposition MPs, including Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, staged a protest in the Parliament complex on Tuesday. They condemned the alleged theft of donations designated for the Ram temple in Ayodhya and criticized police actions against student protesters. This demonstration exemplified the growing tensions between opposition parties and the ruling government over serious accountability issues.
The protest occurred in front of the Makar Dwar of Parliament, where the MPs carried placards and shouted slogans such as ‘chhanda chor, gaddi chor’ and ‘Amit Shah jawaab do’, demanding answers from the Home Minister regarding the theft of temple donations. The MPs symbolically placed donation boxes at the protest site to illustrate the reported misappropriation of funds, raising further questions about fiscal accountability.
Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, along with other leaders from various opposition parties like the Samajwadi Party (SP), Trinamool Congress (TMC), and Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), showcased solidarity in condemning both the alleged donation theft and police brutality. Leaders like Dimple Yadav, Dharmendra Yadav, Sagarika Ghose, Sanjay Yadav, and Manoj Jha attended the gathering, amplifying voices against government actions.
Protesters lined up behind a prominent banner that read ‘Why Amit Shah absent from Parliament’. This highlighted not only their dissent against the factual issues but also the perceived lack of government accountability. The INDIA bloc, a coalition of opposition parties, has vowed to intensify its demands for clarity on the donation theft, often labeled as ‘chhanda chori’, as well as to address the “brutal force” employed against students during their recent protests.
The leaders from the INDIA coalition convened in the chamber of Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, Mallikarjun Kharge, to collectively plot their strategy in confronting the government on these immediate concerns. With rising public sentiment against corruption and police excesses, the opposition seeks to unite various fronts and hold the government accountable. This protest signifies a pivotal moment for the INDIA bloc as it attempts to rally support against the government’s actions.
As political tensions escalate, the opposition aims to leverage public outrage regarding both the theft of donations at one of India’s significant religious sites and the ongoing conflict over civil liberties concerning student protests. Experts believe these issues may significantly affect the upcoming electoral battleground.
The success of the opposition will likely depend on their ability to sustain pressure on the government and engage the electorate effectively in the coming months.
