Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chief Mehbooba Mufti responded to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent video, addressing the discourse surrounding youth in India. In the video, Modi spoke of “forgiving” students who used profane language during the Jantar Mantar protest, igniting a dialogue about generational disparities in opportunities. Mufti presented a stark comparison, highlighting the challenges faced by young people in Jammu and Kashmir.
Mufti emphasized that there exist two distinct Generation Zs in India. One group enjoys inherited opportunities, while the other, particularly in Kashmir, grapples with “inherited curfews and trauma.” She pointed out the reality of Kashmiri youth, who endure curfews, crackdowns, and frequent internet shutdowns, all of which disrupt their education and contribute to high unemployment rates.
In her response, Mehbooba Mufti stated, “Hon’ble PM @narendramodi, there are two Gen Zs in India. One inherited opportunity; the other, in Kashmir, inherited curfews, crackdowns, internet shutdowns, lost classrooms, unemployment, and trauma.” Her remarks drew attention to the stark inequalities faced by the youth in the region.
Mufti argued that Kashmiri youth do not seek sympathy or charity; rather, they demand equal opportunities, dignity, and political space. She implored Modi to acknowledge the systemic issues affecting these young individuals. Furthermore, she urged that if compassion should define India’s future, it must start with addressing the plight of Kashmir.
This exchange highlights ongoing tensions in Indian politics concerning youth, education, and equity. It underscores the need for awareness of the realities faced by Kashmiri students and a commitment to creating a conducive environment for their development.
The persistent issues in Kashmir impact thousands of young lives, increasing calls for government intervention to foster educational initiatives and job opportunities. Advocacy for these rights aims to amplify the voices of the youth struggling under challenging circumstances.
