In a crucial move to ensure the smooth flow of essential supplies during the upcoming winter months, Minister for Technology, Science & Technology, Satish Sharma, held separate meetings with senior officers today to review the operational readiness of two key departments: Food, Civil Supplies & Consumer Affairs (FCS&CA) and Transport.
The primary focus of the meetings was to assess the preparedness of these departments in handling the challenges posed by the harsh winter conditions that often disrupt normal functioning in the region, particularly in Kashmir.
FCS&CA Winter Readiness: Stock & Supply Review
In the meeting with FCS&CA officials, Sharma meticulously reviewed the stock and supply of essential commodities, particularly food grains, across the Kashmir division. As winter approaches, disruptions in transportation, especially with the closure of the National Highway, are a perennial concern, leading to potential shortages of critical supplies.
The Minister expressed strong concern about ensuring an uninterrupted supply of essential goods throughout the winter season, particularly food grains, which are vital for the local population. He was clear in his directive: “The government will not tolerate any lapse in the supply of essentials, especially food grains. It is imperative that we plan ahead, anticipating the challenges posed by weather and logistical difficulties.”
Advance Stockpile to Avoid Shortages
To address these concerns, Sharma instructed the department to stockpile essential commodities well in advance. He emphasized that extra arrangements must be made to ensure that stockpiles are sufficient to meet the needs of the population, even if access to some areas becomes difficult due to weather-induced road closures. “We must always be prepared by storing supplies ahead of time, so people do not face any hardship, especially when the National Highway is closed,” he added.
The department was also asked to coordinate closely with local authorities to ensure timely distribution of essentials, particularly in remote and high-altitude areas, where winter conditions are even more severe.
Transport Department’s Role in Ensuring Mobility
The Minister also reviewed the preparedness of the Transport Department, focusing on the smooth movement of essential goods, especially food supplies, during the winter season. With the frequent closure of roads in the hilly terrain of Kashmir, the Transport Department’s role in ensuring that vital goods reach their destinations is critical. Sharma asked the department to plan for alternate routes, improve coordination with the Road and Highways authorities, and ensure that sufficient transport capacity is available for the movement of goods even during adverse weather conditions.
The department was directed to work on contingency plans to deal with possible road blockages, and to ensure the safety and readiness of the transport fleet for emergency situations.
No Room for Complacency
Minister Sharma’s directive underscored the need for urgency and meticulous planning. He made it clear that the government was committed to providing essential services without any compromise and emphasized that both departments must leave no room for complacency. “The lives and well-being of the people depend on our preparation. Every official must be diligent in their duty to ensure that no one is left without access to basic necessities,” he said.
As winter approaches, the Jammu & Kashmir government remains committed to mitigating the challenges posed by seasonal disruptions and ensuring that essential services continue smoothly for the residents of the region. With these proactive measures in place, the government aims to deliver uninterrupted access to food and other essential services despite the harsh winter conditions.
