Australian Skipper Remains Determined to Break India’s Dominance in Test Series
Adelaide, Dec 5, 2024 – Having already secured the ODI World Cup and multiple Ashes victories, Australian captain Pat Cummins remains determined to add one more prestigious title to his trophy cabinet: the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Despite suffering a crushing 295-run defeat in the opening Test in Perth, Cummins is confident that his team can turn things around and end Australia’s long wait for a series win against India.
The Border-Gavaskar Trophy, which has eluded Australia since their 2-0 victory in 2014-15, is the final item on Cummins’ bucket list. The pacer, who made his Test debut in 2011, played his first Test match against India in 2017. Since then, India has dominated the fixture, winning all four subsequent series — two at home (2017 and 2023) and two away (2018-19 and 2020-21).
“One Last Thing to Tick Off”
“For half of the (Australian) dressing room, we haven’t won the Border-Gavaskar Trophy,” Cummins said with unwavering determination ahead of the second Test in Adelaide. “It’s one last thing to tick off for a lot of us. Almost every challenge we’ve faced in the last few years, we’ve stepped up and done well,” he added.
Despite the heavy loss in Perth, the 31-year-old remains resolute in his belief that his team can win the series. “We need to do that for another home summer and series. From what started as a two- or three-season thing, it’s suddenly become a half-generation thing,” Cummins reflected, acknowledging the magnitude of the challenge.
Australia’s Task: Breaking India’s Dominance
Since their last series win in 2014-15, Australia has struggled to break India’s dominance in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. India has won four consecutive series, each marking a new chapter in the rivalry. Cummins knows the weight of history and the importance of this series, but insists that the pressure is not insurmountable.
“I don’t think it’s pressure. You’re playing at home, and you obviously want to do well. We know India is a really strong side, and a lot of us were part of those recent three series defeats. But yeah, it’s a big series, and we’re not looking too far back in the past,” Cummins said.
Key Players and Team Changes
Cummins will rely on seasoned players like Mitchell Starc, Nathan Lyon, and Mitchell Marsh to help lead the charge. Starc was a part of the successful 2014-15 squad, while Lyon remains a crucial figure in the team’s attack. However, Josh Hazlewood, another key member of that winning team, is not playing in this Test.
Cummins acknowledged the significance of the series, especially after the heavy defeat in Perth, but remained confident in his team’s ability to turn things around. “Every summer, when we play against India, we want to do well,” he said, signaling that the Australian team is already focused on making a comeback in Adelaide.
What’s Next?
As the second Test against India looms, the Australian team is under pressure to bounce back. With the Border-Gavaskar Trophy on the line, this series will define Cummins’ legacy as captain. A victory would not only break India’s dominance but would also complete a long-awaited chapter in Australian cricket history.
