The nation mourns as veteran Congress leader and former Union minister Shivraj Patil was laid to rest with full state honours on Saturday in his home district of Latur. This farewell marks the passing of one of India’s most respected parliamentarians and statesmen.
Leaders from across the political spectrum gathered to pay their last respects. Notable attendees included Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, Union Minister of State for Defence Sanjay Seth, former Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan, and Karnataka Minister Eshwar Khandre.
Patil, a prominent leader of the Lingayat community, was buried at his farm in Varvanti village, approximately six kilometres from Latur, observing traditional Lingayat rites. He was laid to rest in a seated, meditative posture, a reflection of the community’s belief that the soul unites with Lord Shiva after death, negating the need for cremation.
Before the burial, the ceremony included a gun salute, with Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla laying a wreath on Patil’s mortal remains. Maharashtra Congress President Harshwardhan Sapkal and Latur Lok Sabha MP Shivaji Kolge also joined the solemn occasion.
Shivraj Patil, who passed away at the age of 90 on Friday after a brief illness, leaves behind a legacy forged over five decades in politics. His illustrious career featured key roles in the Union government, including that of Speaker of the Lok Sabha and Union Home Minister.
Patil began his political journey as a member of the Latur Municipal Corporation in 1967 and served two terms in the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly between 1972 and 1980. He consistently represented the Latur Lok Sabha constituency for seven terms, winning elections in 1980, 1984, 1989, 1991, 1996, 1998, and 1999.
His ministerial career began under Indira Gandhi‘s government, first as Minister of State for Defence from 1980 to 1982, then taking on the independent charge of the Commerce Ministry from 1982 to 1983. He later managed pivotal portfolios including Science and Technology, Atomic Energy, Electronics, Space, and Ocean Development.
During the Rajiv Gandhi administration, Patil held various key ministerial roles—focusing on Personnel, Defence Production, Civil Aviation, and Tourism. Notably, he served as Union Home Minister from 2004 until November 30, 2008, when he resigned in the wake of the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks due to perceived security oversights.
From 2010 to 2015, he also served as the Governor of Punjab and Administrator of Chandigarh.
Shivraj Patil earned respect for his unwavering commitment to parliamentary ethics. A memorable incident in March 1979 highlighted his integrity. Upon hearing unconfirmed reports about the death of Gandhian leader Jayaprakash Narayan, Patil, then the Speaker of the Maharashtra Assembly, insisted on official verification. After confirming Narayan was alive, he adjourned the House and later led a resolution wishing Narayan well.
The legacy of Shivraj Patil endures, representing an era characterized by parliamentary decorum, administrative know-how, and steadfast political ethics. His contributions have indelibly shaped the fabric of Indian politics.
