Massive Landslide Cuts Off Pangi Valley in Himachal Due to Heavy Rains

In Himachal Pradesh, heavy rainfall over the past 24 hours triggered a massive landslide that cut off the remote Pangi Valley from the rest of the state. The landslide struck along the Sansari–Kullu–Manali road at the border of Chamba and Lahaul-Spiti districts, washing away a nearly 60-metre stretch of road and rendering the region completely inaccessible.

Approximately 40–50 individuals travelling in private vehicles and taxis found themselves stranded at Sugalwas and Kadu Nullah, where many had to spend the night under extremely cold conditions. Eyewitnesses reported that the landslide was so severe that the entire hillside collapsed, leaving no trace of the road and making movement impossible even on foot.

Authorities have acted quickly to shift several stranded individuals to safer locations. The Border Roads Organisation has commenced operations aimed at reopening the road and restoring connectivity to the cut-off valley. This comes as a critical response, as local residents rely heavily on this route for essential supplies and services.

The Meteorological Department has issued weather alerts across the state amid ongoing adverse conditions. An Orange Alert has been raised for districts like Kangra, Kullu, Mandi, Shimla, and Solan, predicting hailstorms, thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds with speeds up to 60 kmph. Additionally, a Yellow Alert warns of similar forecasts in Una, Bilaspur, Hamirpur, Chamba, and Sirmaur.

A prolonged wet spell remains in the forecast, extending until April 13. Regional meteorologists have linked these weather patterns to a Western Disturbance affecting the area. Another system is expected to impact the region starting April 11, raising concerns about further rainfall and potential landslides.

Widespread rainfall has been recorded across the state. Sarahan has received the highest rainfall at 38.5 mm, and there are reports of hailstorm damage to crops in parts of Shimla district. Snowfall is anticipated in higher altitudes, adding to the already adverse weather conditions.

The cold snap has intensified, with Kalpa and Kukumseri recording lows of just 0.4°C. Daytime temperatures in many areas have remained 3–9°C below normal, affecting daily life and agriculture.

In light of the ongoing weather situation, authorities continue to advise residents and travelers to remain cautious. They recommend avoiding landslide-prone routes and heeding official weather advisories to ensure safety during this difficult period.
