Shimla, December 9, 2024 – Himachal Pradesh experienced its first snowfall of the season on Sunday evening, leading to the closure of at least 87 roads, including the Atari-Leh National Highway 3 near the Rohtang Pass in Manali. According to the State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC), the snowfall has significantly impacted road traffic and power supply, with 457 transformers disrupted across the state.
Snowfall and Road Closures
The snowfall affected various regions, with Shimla, Kufri, Fagu, Chansel, Narkanda, and the Churdhar ranges receiving a blanket of snow. Other high-altitude areas, including parts of Manali, Kasauli, and Chail, also recorded snow. The SEOC reported that 58 roads were closed in Shimla, 17 in Kinnaur, six in Kangra, two in Lahaul and Spiti, and one each in Kullu and Chamba districts. The heavy snow caused slippery road conditions, particularly in the upper Shimla region, affecting traffic movement.
Rescue Operations and Cold Wave
Around 800 people stranded in 490 vehicles in Lahaul have been rescued since the snowfall began. Despite challenging conditions, schools in Shimla remained open due to ongoing exams, and the supply of essential goods was not significantly impacted. However, the state continued to face an intense cold wave, with temperatures dropping by four to six degrees Celsius in many areas. High-altitude tribal regions recorded temperatures ranging from 12 to 18 degrees below freezing, with Tabo reporting a low of minus 12.3 degrees Celsius.
Snowfall Data and Rainfall
Shimla received 2.5 cm of snow, while other areas like Koksar recorded 6.7 cm, Khadrala 5 cm, and Sangla 3.6 cm. The lower hills of the state experienced light rainfall, with Kandaghat, Kasauli, Jubbarhatti, and Mandi recording between 1.4 mm and 2.2 mm of rain. The snow and rain combined have reduced the post-monsoon rainfall deficit in the state from 98% to 96%, with the state receiving 2.1 mm of rain compared to the normal 49.3 mm.
Weather Warning
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow warning for dense fog in parts of the Bhakra Dam reservoir area (Bilaspur) and Balh Valley (Mandi) during the early morning, morning, and late-night hours on December 10 and 11.
Impact on Agriculture and Tourism
The first snowfall has brought relief to farmers, apple growers, and the tourism sector. The snowfall has helped end a 10-week dry spell, benefiting crops and enhancing the tourist appeal of the region. Hoteliers in popular tourist spots are hopeful that this weather will attract more visitors in the coming weeks.
